Sunday 3.3.19 Solar

11.15 Fast moving cloud from the west and very breezy with shorts bursts of sunshine. Nothing visible in white light at first.

Surprisingly clear in H-a during brighter moments. Some light, patchy plage near the eastern limb at my 10.00 and further in at 8.00. Gong H-a shows the bright area at 8.00. I have a smudgy prom at my 8.00. Thin and hard to see until I move the etalon sweet spot around.

11.30 Spotted a patch of plage at my 8.00 in white light! The 6" aperture stop made it less visible.

The Head Gardener has insisted that I raise some spinnakers to shield my face from the direct sunlight while at the telescope.  Duly done in stiff, black, camping mattress foam. Lightweight enough not to affect telescope balance. Though it looks anything but black in the camera the increase in image contrast was well worth having.

It can be easily rotated around the fittings to allow for changing telescope attitude. It was better than ending up looking like an Australian cricketer wearing sun block. I wouldn't have known where to polish my eyepieces!

13.00 Becoming steadily cloudier. With far fewer breaks in the clouds.

Monday 4th: Up to storm force gusts are promised over two days. I had better point the shutters into the wind.
