2.4.2020 Tilting Sun software by Atoptics.co.uk.

2nd April 2020. A long, grey, overcast day with gales to over 45mph.

JUST A REMINDER:

DO NOT USE ANY TELESCOPE [OR OTHER INSTRUMENT] TO VIEW THE SUN, WHICH HAS NOT BEEN PROFESSIONALLY DESIGNED, MANUFACTURED AND CORRECTLY FILTERED FOR SOLAR SAFETY!

TAKE NO CHANCES! A BRIEF VIEW OF THE SUN MAY BE THE VERY LAST THING YOU EVER SEE!

DO NOT LEAVE TELESCOPES OR BINOCULARS UNATTENDED IN DAYLIGHT! IT MAY BE CLOUDY NOW BUT THE SUN MAY APPEAR IN YOUR ABSENCE.  ALLOWING THE UNWARY TO VIEW THE SUN. CAUSING INSTANT AND PERMANENT BLINDNESS! WARN YOUR HOUSEHOLD REPEATEDLY OF THE VERY REAL DANGERS OF VIEWING THE SUN WITHOUT GUARANTEED SAFETY.

It has come to my notice that there is a very useful, freeware program. Which draws a grid on a drawing of the sun's disk as it appears in different telescopes. My thanks go to Merlin66, the vastly experienced, Australian solar expert and imager. For bringing the software to my attention on Stargazer's Lounge and Solar Chat! forums.

The software requires your location to be entered and whether you are presently enjoying Daylight Saving Time. Details of your telescope and mounting must then be entered. Remember that the image may appear inverted in your own telescope. Or flipped right to left, in some other telescopes, but not in others. A camera can often be rotated to correct an inverted image but not to change right to left. Remember that a diagonal will usually change the sun's orientation.

The Tilting Sun software will automatically calculate your local time from your location and remember your entered details until you click on the DRAW button to update to the latest information. There is a [Time] NOW button but remember that the DRAW button must be pressed afterwards to update the grid overlay.

It then draws the sun with its correct tilt on a grid overlay to indicate East to West drift of any features.

There is a further Graphics option which allows a choice of size, colour of the grid and background, colour of the limb, text and angles, etc. The resulting grid drawing may then be copied and overlaid onto your own solar images by your usual, image handling software.

The grid is very useful in allowing the correct position of any solar features to be shared. The software also provides the position of the sun in the sky at your location.

Do ensure you acknowledge the software source if you use it for published images in print or online. Just because it is freeware doesn't mean you can use it as you please without the permission of the author and owner. Respect their hard work, knowledge and skill in producing, maintaining, updating and hosting the software. Then kindly allowing you to use it without charge.
