3.3.21

3.03.2021 I was framed!

 *

Wednesday 3rd 26F/-3C. Overcast, hard frost and slightly misty. Becoming very thick mist!

I really need to find something less "energetic" to do today. I am still aching all over from yesterday's efforts to erect the basic framework. Even with each individual frame reduced to two 4m uprights and only two cross braces they felt very heavy as I brought them upright. [About 2x4 + 2 x 90= 10m x 2.1 kg/m = 21kg] The frames are far too wide for a comfortable lift. With my arms pointing upwards and outwards to support the uprights as I shuffled forwards.

More energy was required to keep them safely vertical as I literally walked the frames over to the building. Then I had to slide them sideways around the outside of the growing framework. Finally lifting them bodily into place into the [very tight] steelwork shoes. There was often a lot of levering involved as the brackets refused to give way to a second 2x4. As all the while I struggled to hold them upright from a low position!

I need to fix all the frames together to release the clamps for other tasks. That can't happen until I have shortened the rear frames to match the rest. I think I shall be using the jigsaw working from a tall ladder. To save bringing those frames back down to earth.

I also have to make the decision whether to bolt or screw the frames together. There are coach bolts left over from the last build. Where I bought boxes of them to save money over loose purchases. I also have roofing, dog toothed "star washers" to increase lateral resistance to movement. These go between opposing timber faces and dig into them as the bolt is tightened. It feels slightly overkill in this context. I have been using 100x6mm Torx wood screws so far. These provide tremendous grip even in end grain.

I have ordered some heavily discounted F-clamps by reputable makers. The quality varies enormously between makes. I was so desperate for clamps that I was having to use woodworking vices to hold pairs of frames together. I can't believe the prices for G-cramps! Mine were all bought secondhand from flea markets.
